According to the Turkish Statistical Institute, Turkey’s silk trade value from January to September reached USD 1.767 billion, a year-over-year decrease of 0.15%. Of this, exports accounted for USD 1.46 billion, down by 3.47% year-over-year, while imports totaled USD 0.307 billion, reflecting a year-over-year increase of 19.42%.

This report analyzes Turkey’s silk trade from January to September 2024. According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute, Turkey’s total silk trade value reached USD 1.767 billion, a year-over-year decrease of 0.15%. Of this, exports accounted for USD 1.46 billion, down 3.47% year-over-year, while imports totaled USD 0.307 billion, reflecting a year-over-year increase of 19.42%.

  1. Exports:
    • Main Markets: Turkey’s main silk export markets include the EU, Belarus, the United Kingdom, Russia, and Iraq. The EU holds the largest share, accounting for 54.79% of total exports, although it experienced a slight decrease of 0.56% year-over-year. Demand in Morocco and Uzbekistan showed significant growth, increasing by 37.3% and 246.97%, respectively.
    • Silk Yarn Exports: Turkey’s silk yarn exports declined sharply, with total exports dropping by 79.7% to only USD 1.544 million. Egypt became the primary market, holding a 29.18% share with notable year-over-year growth.
    • Silk Fabric Exports: Silk fabric exports totaled USD 39.33 million, down 15.11% year-over-year. Demand in Morocco rose by 46.85%, while the Russian market showed a modest increase of 4.27%.
  2. Imports:
    • Main Source Countries: Turkey’s primary sources of silk imports are China, Georgia, and the EU. China is the largest supplier, accounting for 25.12% of total imports, with a year-over-year increase of 31.6%. Imports from Bangladesh and Egypt also grew significantly, by 76.18% and 79.43%, respectively.
    • Silk Yarn Imports: Silk yarn imports totaled USD 3.3617 million, a decrease of 18.98% year-over-year. China remains the main supplier, contributing 59.48% of the total.
    • Silk Fabric Imports: Silk fabric imports rose by 9.85%, with imports from China accounting for 43.02% of the total.

Trends and Analysis:

  • On the export side, demand for Turkish silk products in major markets has declined, but strong growth in Morocco and Uzbekistan offers new opportunities for Turkey’s silk industry.
  • On the import side, Turkey remains highly dependent on Chinese silk but has also increased imports from countries like Georgia and Bangladesh, indicating a trend toward market diversification.
